Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using such drugs need to be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
