Trumpism's most illuminating and characteristic moments β not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening β emerged earlier this harvest season. He has committed acts countless times more severe β the current estimate of deaths from his cuts to USAID stands at 600,000 and rising, and this week an analysis predicted his energy policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted β genuinely, no former commander would have conceived β unilaterally destroying large sections of the White House in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom conduct transactions with federal agencies.

As bewildering as it is to watch the leader seek toι’ θ¦ the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion within America who might not perceive it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves β among senior generations a near majority β who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of love into a symbol of hostility who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in scripture; this has happened more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and given that the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly absolutely not the account of a mighty king emerging; instead, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a different country to escape covert authorities. The infant develops in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his message focuses on affection for fellow humans, especially for the poor β and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Jesus' answer to hostility is to present the opposite cheek β not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a means to instruct the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing too.
The evident and straightforward fact that the Savior of the gospels calls for a form of extreme compassion centered on the poor is what has always made Christian religion somewhat of a controversial faith: appealing to the general public, but due to its natural unconventionality demanding to be restrained. In the fifties it was contained through watering down β Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Highest Among Us
Hence I have become encouraged to observe the persistent defiance against Trump develop in this past year. It has served as significant comfort to help build the initiative that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. We must have to continue it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags during all protests and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.
