Uche Ignites Dominant Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though entering their maiden European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a comfortable win that virtually secures them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS should be enough to secure direct passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Moment
This occasion provided a platform for several Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season proved outmatched against a mostly second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Control Established from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the official waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, indicating there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
